Kevin Casas-Zamora

Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora has been the Secretary-General of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) since 2019. The Stockholm-based intergovernmental organization is dedicated to advancing global democracy to enable sustainable development and fulfil universal human aspirations. Kevin Casas-Zamora also serves as a Senior Fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue. He has over three decades of experience in democratic governance and has held positions as Costa Rica’s Second Vice President and Minister of National Planning as well as the Secretary for Political Affairs at the Organisation of American States. Dr. Casas-Zamora has taught at several higher education institutions in the U.S. He holds a Law degree from the University of Costa Rica, a Master’s in Government from the University of Essex, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oxford. His research has focused on political finance, elections, and democratization in Latin America.
